Norway spruce is one of the best types of spruce for Iowa landscapes due in part to their fast growth, better heat/humidity tolerance, and ability to withstand some periods of drought. In juvenility, Norway spruce often resembles Black Hills spruce (though is much more aromatic) and it isn't until maturity that the tree takes on a different shape. Branches often swoop downward and up, giving the trees a very majestic and unique prominence in the landscape. Dark green needles surround the stems and long, slender brown cones hang from branch tips. Norway spruce do best in slightly acidic, well-drained soils in full sun. Trees show some tolerance to urban conditions and drought in maturity.
