Eastern white pine is a fine textured evergreen that is seen in landscapes throughout Iowa. It is distinguished by soft, long, bluish-green needles that are arranged in bundles and craggy-looking bark that is often covered with dried white sap. White pines are often broad or irregular in shape as they grow and will start producing slender, brown pine cones in maturity. Some needles may turn yellow in the fall and shed, adding some interest to the autumn landscape. Eastern white pine does best in acidic, moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Does not do well in compacted soils.

Pinus strobus is an Iowa native.
