Pin oak is an excellent choice for a shade or street tree in soils prone to wet conditions. They have a large presence in the landscape and are identified by their elliptical/pyramidal architecture. Pointed, glossy dark green lobed leaves cover the tree throughout the growing season before changing to a deep red in autumn. Acorns (once the tree reaches maturity) ripen in autumn and are a great source of food for wildlife. Pin oaks do best in acidic, moist soils in full sun and will tolerate occasional flooding, poorly drained soils, salts, and clay.

Quercus palustris is an Iowa native.
