Silver lindens are very popular trees and are recognizable in the landscape by their very pyramidal shape. They tolerate most urban conditions making them a prime option for street/park trees and, out of the linden species, this one is better suited for drought conditions; preference however is to full sun in well-drained, loamy soils. Silver lindens have bicolored leaves (hence their namesake) and are a glossy dark green above with silvery white, fuzzy undersides that, when fluttering in a breeze, seem to sparkle like silver. In summer, small, fragrant pale yellow flowers appear and by autumn turn into attractive nutlets. Fall color varies between a pale green/yellow. 'Sterling' is noted for its excellent heat and drought tolerance as well as some Japanese beetle resistance.
