Smokebush, or smoketree, is a very sought-after shrub for its multi-season interest. In late spring, fluffy, smoky pinkish-red plumes appear after flowering and give the shrub its namesake. The oval leaves of Winecraft Gold® change color throughout the growing season; emerging orange in spring, changing to a bright gold color, then darkening to chartreuse through the summer. Plants suffer very little from insects or disease and are often overlooked by deer and rabbits. Smokebush does best in well drained soils in full sun; it hates wet, poor-draining soils.
