Sweetshrub, or Carolina allspice, is mostly grown for the fragrant, magnolia-like flowers. Very fragrant (melon or strawberry scented), large white flowers appear in mid-spring that have yellow and purple markings in the center and cover the multi-stemmed shrub. Some sporadic blooming will occur in the summer where they can hide amidst the glossy green leaves. Not much for fall color, but deer tend to avoid the plant. In Iowa, sweetshrub does best in a protected spot in average, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. No major disease or insect issues. Flowering stems can be used as cut flowers.
