Turkish filberts are prized for their ornamental values and make excellent shade or street trees because of their adaptability to urban conditions. In early spring, they are covered in yellow or brown catkins which lead to clusters of edible nuts by autumn. Their canopies are covered in large, bright green semi glossy toothed leaves throughout the growing season then change to a mottled yellow color in fall. The grey corky, furrowed bark is rather attractive and adds interest to the winter landscape. Turkish filberts prefer rich acidic well-drained soils in full sun, though will tolerate excessive moisture and periods of drought in maturity.
