Yellowwood is a beautiful medium-sized tree that has multi season interest. In May, the tree is adorned with hanging fragrant white wisteria-like flowers that eventually mature into interesting, flat seed pods by autumn. Compound medium-green leaves cover the canopy throughout the growing season before turning a crisp yellow in fall. Once leaflets have fallen off, sometimes the yellow petioles remain adding intrigue to the tree. Its rounded architecture and smooth bark also adds texture and form to the winter landscape. Yellowwood prefers moist, well-drained soils in full sun, though will tolerate some drought in maturity. Trees should be sited in wind protected areas for best structure however. Its common name derives from the interior hardwood which is yellow. Trees may take a decade before flowers start to appear.
