Shumard oak is in the red oak group and is prized for its fall color and effectiveness as a street tree or in droughty conditions. They have dark glossy green, pointed-lobed leaves throughout the growing season before turning reddish brown in late autumn. Acorns are produced once the tree becomes established and matured (usually around the 25 year mark). Shumard oak is a Midwest native and is often found in dry or wet acidic soils in full sun. It makes a great urban/street tree due to its tolerance to pollution, drought, salt, and poor, compacted soils. Bark is gray in color and is broken into plates or ridges adding texture and interest to the landscape in all seasons.
