White oak is revered for its stateliness in the landscape and for its wine-colored fall color. It is a very large, broad and round tree that is covered in medium green, deeply lobed leaves that mature into a merlot-red fall color alongside an abundance of acorns. Gray ridged bark also adds texture and intrigue to the landscape. For these trees, white oak scions have been grafted to swamp white oak rootstocks allowing the trees to grow in acidic, moist soils in full sun. Thanks to the rootstock, these white oaks display greater tolerance to drought, clay, wet soils, alkalinity, salts, and other urban growing conditions.

Quercus alba and Quercus bicolor are Iowa natives.
