'Princeton' American elm has excellent resistance to Dutch elm disease. It is a fairly large tree that is tolerant of alkaline and droughty soils, however it prefers average, well drained moist soils. It has four season interest: samaras in spring, glossy green foliage in summer, good yellow fall color, and vase shaped architecture that is discernible in the winter. Elms are also prized for their ability to withstand various growing conditions (salts, clay, and drought), thus it does well as a street tree or a shade tree.
Ulmus americana is an Iowa native.
