White oak is revered for its stateliness in the landscape and for its wine-colored fall color. It is a very large, broad and round tree that prefers moist, well-drained acidic soils in full sun, however it tolerates a wide array of growing conditions, including drought and clay. Medium green, deeply lobed leaves mature into a merlot-red fall color alongside an abundance of acorns. Gray ridged bark also adds texture and intrigue to the landscape.
Quercus alba is an Iowa native.
