Coral bells continue to be great companion plants for hostas and other shade garden species and are increasingly popular as new cultivars come onto market. Plants prefer moist, well-draining soils in part shade but can tolerate other light conditions provided moisture is consistent. Coral bells are characterized by mounds of rounded leaves in varying colors and are followed by panicles of small bell-like flowers in shades of white, pink, or red that also function as good cut flowers for bouquets. They suffer from few insects or diseases. 'Obsidian' is known for its shiny black velvet leaves that hold color well through the growing season. This is a great compact cultivar as well. Bell flowers are white and somewhat inconspicuous.
