Japanese maples are all the rage in part due to its intense red/purple coloring. These make excellent specimen or accent trees in a protected site, such as, up against a house or in the understory of a treeline. Foliage is often a deep burgundy color throughout the growing season and makes dappled shade due to the small, five-pointed leaves. Trees are ablaze in the fall in shades of scarlet and even the samaras share the same coloring. Japanese maples prefer moist, well drained soils in slightly acidic environments. For architectural interest, multi-stemmed trees can be found. Rabbit resistant. Emperor I® is one of the hardier Japanese maples; leaves emerge later than most meaning they miss late spring frosts. Bark is also a deep red/black color.
