Commonly seen as street trees or used for dappled shade, honeylocust are indigenous to the United States and are prized for their adaptability and durability. They prefer moist, well drained soils in full sun, however they tolerate a wide range of growing sites, including: drought, clay soils, salts, high heat, humidity, and wind. Small, medium-green leaflets make up the majority of the canopy and when autumn arrives, turn a brilliant golden yellow. Imperial® is a thornless, mostly seedless cultivar that is more rounded in shape with a compact habit.

Gleditsia triacanthos is an Iowa native.
